Twenty-seven year old, African-American, Minka Greene has to endure watching her twin sister marry the man she loves. Her weight is up, and her confidence is down. Not exactly the ideal time to meet the real man of her dreams.
The Scale opens in Martha’s Vineyard with Minka attending Keely and Blake’s engagement party at Martha’s Way, the beautiful inn owned and operated by the tall, blond, tattooed man with the piercing blue eyes. It just so happens Jason Montgomery is also Blake’s childhood friend and the best man. Dealing with a whirl of emotions, Minka faints in Jason’s arms.
When she wakes up naked in Jason’s bed after a night of passion, the Vineyard confirmed bachelor struggling with his own demons and the woman filled with self-doubt and pining for another man are joined in an experience that will change their lives.
The Scale is the first book of the Martha’s Way series.
She tilted her head back to meet his gaze. “Anything special you wanted?”
The weight of the question hung between them for a while. Their bodies moved slowly to the rhythm of the song.
He smiled. “You mean my special wish?”
She nodded, unable to speak.
“I wish to kiss you again. One kiss wasn’t enough.”
Oh my! She opened her mouth to say something, but before the words could be spoken, his lips were against hers. The kiss was like nothing Minka had ever experienced. It was more intense than earlier, causing her head to spin out of control. His tongue slipped inside her mouth and her wall crumbled. She wanted more. Putting her inhibitions aside for the night, she wrapped her arms around his neck and drew her body even closer to his. He seemed to like that because he moaned before he deepened the kiss.
“I want to take you home and make love to you,” he whispered against her lips.
A sudden urge to abandon all she had ever known and give herself to this man overpowered her. Maybe that was the point. Maybe for once in her life, she needed to throw caution to the wind. She could tuck away all of her insecurities, enjoy the moment and not think about what was to come. Especially since she now possessed zero chance of ever taking the spot Keely owned in Blake’s heart.
At that instant, Minka forgot they were standing in the middle of Vapor’s lounge. She forgot the DJ wasn’t standing far away; she forgot there were still a few stragglers at the bar. Jason’s hands rested on the curve of her back. His lips brushed against her ear. His breathing increased. She closed her eyes and lost herself in him.
“I want to go home with you.”

Except one year later, they’re still hooking up and things aren’t so clear cut anymore. Especially when a surprise pregnancy enters the picture.
Adam is determined to marry Lily and raise their child as a family. But Lily refuses to settle for anything less than love.
As the two go on a journey of discovering, secrets are revealed, testing the strength of their connection. Can they learn not to give the past the power to define their future?
Lily reached the doorway when Adam caught her hands. The whole thing happened too fast. His fingers laced in hers, chests pressing against one another. With his weight he directed her to the wall, raised her arms up over her head, and caged her in. Not one to cower, she looked straight into his eyes.
“You don’t love me,” she whispered.
His jaw tightened, but he made no attempt to dispute otherwise. Her heart scattered in tiny little pieces. She hadn’t expected a declaration of undying love, but the reality still stung.
“I need love, Adam. That mad, passionate love. It should be experienced at least once in a lifetime.” She examined his stoic expression, and her posture sagged. The fact she was forever bonded to a man who didn’t love her smacked her in the face. It shouldn’t. She already knew that. But…still, reality sucked. “That’s not who we are.”
