Black Cat Facts

I love cats. Unfortunately in the United States black cats are the last to be adopted from shelters. Not to mention that black cats are still abused and sometimes killed on Halloween. Often shelters will refuse to let people adopt black cats in October because they fear for their safety. How did black cats get labeled as evil?

Somewhere during the Middle Ages, Europeans got the idea that black cats were associated with witchcraft. The elderly ladies who fed stray black cats were often the ones fingered as witches. The cats were of course their familiars. Feeding off of this belief it is believed that if a black cat crosses your path it is a symbol of misfortune.

I think black cats have unjustly gotten a bad rap. After all, the Salem witch trials weren’t exactly fair you know. Did you know that many other cultures view black cats as good luck? In fact in Japan, single women own black cats because they think the feline will help attract potential suitors. So the black cats are not only good luck but they can be sort of a matchmaker.

Here are some other random black cat facts. There are 19 cat breeds which list “black” as a color option. Black cats tend to be more commonly male than female. Many black cats have golden eyes, which is the result of high melanin pigment content in their bodies.

This guy kind of looks like a cat. He’s got golden eyes. If you scratch him behind the ears, he purrs! Anybody want to take him home? Check out our cat shifter story in the Halloween edition of Sexy to Go for more ideas on what to do with him….
Excerpt -  Cat Eyes by Haley Whitehall:

When I returned Alastair remained seated at the table. The human Alastair sat with perfect posture as if chiseled from stone by Michelangelo’s hand, not one single hair on his chest, his inquisitive, dreamy eyes, watching me.
My heart thumped wildly. If I hadn’t seen my mother shift constantly throughout my childhood, I would have screamed.
“It is finally Halloween,” Alastair spoke in a deep raspy voice. “I had tired of eating mice, birds, and table scraps.”
“You can only shift on Halloween?” I ventured a guess.
“Oh, I can shift freely now. Your father bound me in cat form until Halloween.” He shrugged, his grin showing off his dimples. “A small sacrifice for a beautiful woman. Your father wanted to ensure we bonded, and I didn’t rush things, since they wouldn’t be around to supervise the mating ritual.”
It took a second for his words to catch up to my sluggish brain. “Mating ritual? You’re to be my husband?”
Alastair nodded. “As I said, you are my present as well.”
“Holy toadstool.”
