Title: Superhero Syndrome

Author: Caryn Larrinaga

Genre: Paranormal Romance

About Superhero Syndrome:

Tess McBray was dying. The Solstice Syndrome had no cure, and she resigned herself to an early grave. But just when she gave up on survival, all her symptoms mysteriously disappeared. All but one symptom, anyway. Something is wrong with Tess’s hands. They absorb any material they touch, and her skin turns to wood, or steel, or concrete. It doesn’t take this comic-book obsessed 21-year-old long to figure out what’s going on: somehow, she’s developed super powers. And she’s not the only one; across the country, people are coming forward and sharing their gifts with the world. In her own city, where the police are battling a human trafficking operation, a masked vigilante called The Fox is saving lives and stopping criminals. Tess doesn’t know where she fits into this new, super-powered world. But when people around her start disappearing, she can’t just sit on the sidelines. Teaming up with The Fox might be the only way to rid her city of evil and save the people she loves most.

About Caryn Larrinaga:

Caryn Larrinaga is a Basque-American mystery, horror, and urban fantasy writer living in Utah with her husband and cats. Her debut novel Donn’s Hill (March 2017, Immortal Works Press) garnered rave reviews from fans of the cozy mystery and paranormal genres, and her new urban fantasy Superhero Syndrome (September 2017, Twisted Tree Press) will be out this fall. Watching scary movies through split fingers terrified Caryn as a child, and those nightmares inspire her to write now. She lives in a 90-year-old house with a colorful history, and the creaking walls and narrow hallways send her running (never walking) up the stairs from her basement. Exploring her fears through writing makes Caryn feel a little less foolish for wanting a buddy to accompany her into the tool shed. When her fingers aren't glued to her laptop keyboard, Caryn also enjoys binge-watching Netflix with her husband, reading, playing video games, and filling up her phone's flash memory with pictures of her cats. She loves music and plays the bass guitar. Caryn is an active member of the League of Utah Writers and the Utah Chapter of the Horror Writers Association.

When her parents are condemned to death by Morgan Fay for the crime of reading, Arti Penderhagen becomes a fugitive. Hunted by Mordred, the sadistic police captain who recites poetry to enhance his physical strength, Arti escapes to the Isle of Avalon, a sanctuary for outlaws. There she meets an old librarian named Merl who tells her about the Grail Tome, an ancient book in Morgan Fay's possession that can alter the course of history. Can Arti steal the book in time to save her family?

Excerpt

The fire crept across the floor, devouring paper and carpet, gaining momentum as it spread. A thick, black smoke filled the room, rolling over itself like a storm cloud, ravenous flames growling hungrily as they climbed. A moment later, there was another sound: a deep, drum-like thudding, barely audible above the burning tempest. A lower section of the shelf separated from the wall, and a row of hard covers slapped the floor. More books cascaded to the carpet, and a groping hand emerged.
The girl coughed violently, retching as she labored to breath amid the thickening blanket of smoke. She squeezed out from behind the book case, reaching back to pull a duffel bag from the cavity, pushing aside the dish, cup, and utensils her father had cast into the void in the rush to hide her. The bag held provisions, preparations made for a day they prayed would never come.
Making sure her vidlink was in her pocket, she lifted the hood of her sweatshirt and with eyes clenched shut, crawled across the floor, dragging the duffel bag. Scalding heat seared her throat as she gasped for air, her face and hands feeling like they were on fire. Gulping a mouthful of acrid smoke, an intense wave of nausea washed over the girl, and she fell against the wall of books. She was helpless now, certain she was going to die.
As the firestorm raged, her mind floated away from the horror. She was a young child again, sitting on her father’s lap, following his finger as it traced words on the page. She giggled and squirmed with excitement as the story unfolded, peeking ahead, eager to find out how the tale would end. Her mother leaned toward her from the adjacent chair, her smiling face awash in the light of the reading lamp. This is our secret, Arti. You can’t tell anyone. She could hear herself answer, I promise.
When the story was done, she reached across with her tiny hand and closed the book’s cover. She smiled up at her parents expectantly, waiting to say the ritual words together. And they lived happily ever after.
From somewhere in the cloud of her delirium, Arti Penderhagen heard the books on the shelves call to her, drawing her back to the present. Words echoed from their pages, guiding her hand along their bindings, showing her the way out.

How to Meet Deadlines and Remain Sane

When I saw this topic, my first thought was “Perfect, this is something I can definitely give advice on.” My second thought was, “Not sure if I actually remain sane during the process, however.”
Ha, ha.

That’s true. Publishing deadlines are pull-your-hair-out while trying not to yell at your kids kind of moment. Everything needs to be completed yesterday and tomorrow still holds a laundry list soaring toward the clouds.

So. How do I do it?

First off, I pace myself. For years (when I still worked full time) I woke up at 4 or 4:30 every morning and wrote 2,000 words. I started when I was pregnant with my first child and kept on after she was born. Even when I woke up multiple times during the night to feed her or settle her back to sleep, I still hauled my rear end out of bed at 4 A.M. because what I wanted was more important than my need for bed.

Discipline is how I manage a career in writing. I manage my time by still waking up early, not 4 AM early, but around 5 or so. That’s my time to myself. I carve it out every day and write my words, hitting my daily count.

My basic point is: there is no procrastination in this job. I write and focus on all the bits that need pulling together—cover design, formatting, blurbs, and advertising daily. I work each and every day on this career and you know what I’ve learned? Slow and steady wins the race.

Yes, that means I don’t take a lot of time off and yes, that means I still want to pull my hair out, but I also make time for me. Take walks with my kids, play with them, enjoy family time, because I also need to refuel, fill up my well of creativity and love life.

Because that’s why I write—so I can enjoy my life with my family, and that’s what keeps me on track with my deadlines. That’s what I would tell anyone interested in writing: know why you’re doing it, keep it in the forefront of your brain for those times when you’re stressed and don’t think you can pull it all together. You can— believe in yourself and everything will work out.

It always does.

About Always You:

I’ve been broken since the day I was born, with a past full of ugly secrets and a brother doing life in prison.   Not that you’d know it if you read the tabloids. According to them I’m the rock-solid guitarist for the biggest band in the world. I’m the dependable one. The steady one. The anchor.   They don’t know the truth. No one knows who I am underneath, once the music is over and the lights are off.   No one but Darcy.   She’s my best friend. She’s my fucking savior, my light in the dark, beautiful as hell and talented as fuck and every bit as broken as me.   And I fucking yearn for her. I have for years. I see the way she looks at me, what’s behind her eyes.   I know what she thinks about alone, in the dark, because how could I not know.   It’s getting worse. Every second, every heartbeat, every moment we spend together and every secret we share makes me want her more. Even though I know that one kiss, one night could ruin everything we have, I need her.   And for Darcy, I’ll risk it all.

“Close your eyes,” I say, looking over my shoulder at him. A slight smile lights up his face as he holds his hands away from him body, trying not to touch anything with the gloves on.
“You know I’ve seen you naked.”
“We were drunk.”
You were drunk.”
I make a face, because he’s right. Trent doesn’t really drink, aside from a single beer now and then. I don’t blame him. If I’d grown up with his father I doubt I’d drink either.
“And high,” I say. “Are you thinking of the time I tore off all my clothes because I thought they were turning into pancake batter, or the time I made you come skinny dipping because I was convinced that the ocean would give us super powers?”
I can’t help but picture it again: moonlight, waves, everything silver and black. Trent calmly telling me not to try breathing underwater, and then when we finally went back to shore, the criss-crossed scars on his huge, muscled back. It was before I knew. I remember thinking they weren’t real, but they are.
“I was thinking of the time we were in St. Louis and one of the girls from Candyboots dared you to go in the Mississippi River, so you tore off all your clothes and went in right then and there just to prove you’d do it.”
Fuck, I’d totally forgotten about that. It was not a good decision. That part of the Mississippi isn’t for swimming.
“You still have to close your eyes,” I say.
Trent dutifully closes his eyes, still smirking. My heart’s going about two hundred beats a minute and there’s a tiny voice in the back of my head saying so Trent wants to see you topless, isn’t that interesting. I ignore it.
I pull my shirt over my head, leaving my arms in the sleeves so my back is exposed but my boobs are covered. I’m still pretty fucking naked, though, and it makes the squirming in my stomach start all over again.
“Okay,” I say, my face hot and my eyes closed, arms clamped tightly over my boobs.
He doesn’t say anything, but he steps in close behind me, his fingers on my side. You wouldn’t think a guy who looks like Trent or who’s got Trent’s life story would be as gentle as he is, but I barely feel it as he releases the Ace bandage from around my back.

Author Bio:

I love writing sexy, alpha men and the headstrong women they fall for. My weaknesses include: beards, whiskey, nice abs with treasure trails, sarcasm, cats, prowess in the kitchen, prowess in the bedroom, forearm tattoos, and gummi bears. I live in California with my very own sexy, bearded, whiskey-loving husband and two hell-raising cats.

Trailer

Excerpt

I flinch, glad he can’t see me across two thousand miles. Even working in the kitchens most nights only covers my food, my textbooks. Not the tuition bill. “You’re the one who wanted him to work for you. You’re the one who made him the stake in our last game.”

“And you’re the one who lost,” he says lightly.

“Do you know where he is?”

“Of course. Like you said, he works for me. I would be a careless employer if I let my men go wandering off, gambling and racking up debt and questioning their loyalty to me.”

A shiver runs through me. “Then where is he?”

“He’s a grown-up, Penny. Like you are now. He’s responsible for himself. You only need to worry about your studies. I’m sure Algebraic Topology is taking up plenty of your focus.”

It’s one of my courses this semester. How does he know that?

“Stop playing with me.”

“Why should I?” he says with a soft laugh. “It’s so much fun.”

Frustration stings my eyes, hot and damp. I look up at the wide-open sky, willing myself not to cry. There are a million stars visible here, most of the land owned by Smith College or one of the other campuses. So much land, so much pride. There aren’t buildings climbing on top of other buildings, as if they might sink into the concrete ground if they don’t. There aren’t glass towers reaching to an endless black sky.

“I’m never coming back,” I say abruptly.

His laugh falls silent. “I know.”

“I hate it there. I hate Tanglewood and being powerless. And most of all I hate you.”

The last part is a lie, because I don’t hate him. I’m drawn to him; I’m repelled by him. It’s far too complex a relationship, an equation I’ve never been able to write. It makes me wonder if I’m lying about the other parts—if maybe some twisted part of me misses home.

If some twisted part of me misses being powerless, too.

“Ah, Penny,” he says, sounding infinitely weary. “I hate you too.”

The words shock me, but the hurt inside shocks me more. He shouldn’t be able to wound me. Three years away from home, growing up, growing strong. It should have been enough armor to protect against anything he could say to me. But the arrow sinks deep, proving that I’ll never be able to escape him.

“What did I do to you?” I ask, quiet, in a voice like I’m six years old again. Like I’m speaking to the wild boy I found by the lake, one I lured into my trailer like a wolf.

He answers the same way, a surly teenage boy, fierce and vulnerable at once. “You made me care. You made me want, when I needed to leave. You made me feel, when I would have preferred to die. You brought me back to life.”

And I condemned him to torture. That’s what happened when he sacrificed himself so that I could stay safe. Two children with so few choices. “I’m sorry,” I whisper.

“Don’t worry. I got my revenge, after all.”

My blood runs cold, almost subzero at the words. There’s only one person left in my sad little family. One person he could hurt. “Did you hurt him?”

“By giving him a job when he couldn’t hold one down? By paying him enough that his daughter could escape the city, could go to a fancy college instead of becoming a corner-store whore? Yes, I’ve been horrible to him. A monster.”

“Then why isn’t he answering his phone?”

In the pause I can picture him in a three-piece suit, reclining in one of his ridiculously expensive leather chairs. Some amber liquid in a crystal-cut glass. “Don’t come back,” he says, his voice grim. “You made it out of here. Let that be enough.”

A soft click ends the connection, leaving me bereft.

And more worried than before.

Something is happening in Tanglewood, something bad enough for my father not to call, something horrible enough that even Damon Scott has warned me away. I look up at the infinite stars, but they’re dimmer than before. The whole world muted. It wasn’t a new life that I found so far from home. It was a long dream, and now I’m painfully awake.
