As the head of the North Vampire Coven and owner of Caprice Casino and Club Moroii, alpha-male billionaire Lance Steel has more money and incredible good looks than any one man deserves. He is a great husband and father, but he’s also a vampire. His wife, Leila, is human and his son is a dhampir—half human and half vampire—but in order to live a human life with his wife and son, he wants to become human again.
As a brilliant doctor and scientist, Leila has developed a sunlight serum, and friends Amy and Elias are working on a cure for vampirism, but is Lance willing to give up his vampire and become human again for his family? Or will his decision cost him the lives of his wife and son, and the destruction of his entire coven? Which path will he choose at the crossroads?
Moving over to the window, I looked over at the expanse of ocean, and it looked too inviting to pass up. I slipped into some shorts and dove from the back patio into the ocean, and the cool water felt heavenly. I dove down deep, passing fish of all sorts, even barracuda and sharks, but they gave me a wide berth, sensing the predator within me. Diving down deep, there was lovely corral in all shades of orange, pick, yellow, blue, and purple, along with grouper and sea anemones living within it. Swimming down deep within the ocean was like visiting another world, another planet, where color and odd creatures uncommon to human eyes reigned supreme.
Suddenly, yelling and screaming came from the hut. Leila and Jase! I rose quickly to the surface, unaffected by the depth. A moment later, I broke free to the surface.
“Lance!” Leila screamed as Jase cried.
I swam as quickly as I could toward the hut. A moment later, I was on the back porch with my fists doubled, and ran quickly inside. Someone hit me with a two-by-four, but it just broke the board. Astonishment flitted through the man’s eyes, stopping him for just a moment, long enough for me to grab him by the throat and lift him off the ground. He was a vampire, but his skin was too pale, and his eyes were glazed over.
“Leila? Where are you?” I asked, looking frantically over my shoulder for her or for Jase, but saw nothing. My eyes flared and I tightened my grip on his neck. His eyes bulged out as I crushed his windpipe and quickly threw him to the ground. On the ground, I stomped hard onto his throat and ripped off his head as crimson blood rushed across the floor. He immediately burst into flames along with the blood.
“Leila?” I ran into the bedroom, my eyes searching, when someone punched me hard on the chest, sending me flying backward.
“Lance!” Leila yelled, but her voice was stifled, as if someone had shoved a hand over her mouth.
Rage filled me as the vampire walked purposefully toward me, his eyes also glazed, zombie-like, his skin too pale. “Of course … the Outsiders.” I had not seen any of them in years, but if these men were Outsiders, then they could not be reasoned with. They were out for blood … literally.
“Do not call me that!” the zombie vampire raged as he charged toward me.
I knew that I only had minutes. The Outsiders could not be reasoned with, could not be bargained with, and had no humanity. They craved one thing and one thing only … blood. “You picked the wrong family when you came after mine,” I said, grabbing his head as I shoved his body against the wall. His chest cavity writhed and his head wore a surprised look as I held it within my hands. When I dropped it to the ground, his head and body both burst into flames. I looked across the room and red, orange, and yellow flames rose from the sectional couch, having caught fire from the other flaming vampire.
“Leila!” I yelled as I ran frantically back into the bedroom, not sure what I expected to see, fearing the worst.
Jase cried hysterically from his crib, looking at the far wall, pointing. I looked over and another vampire with glazed eyes had his arm wrapped around Leila’s throat, holding her to his chest. I looked around and no one else was in the room. I left Jase crying in his crib and turned my full attention toward my fragile Leila, now at the mercy of a monster.
