My Inspiration: The Things that Inspire Me

in·spi·ra·tion
1. something that makes someone want to do something or that gives someone an idea about what to do or create : a force or influence that inspires someone
Merriam-Webster

There are so many things that have provided inspiration to me over the years. I’ve had dreams that became novels. I’ve seen strange places, and I’ve thought “what if.” I’ve received an idea from a news story. I’ve had characters talk to me and insist I get writing. I’m met interesting people. But there’s also the not-so-obvious sources of inspiration. The people and things that allow me the freedom of being who I am so that I can relax and the creativity can flow. I’ve listed a few sources for my inspiration below.

My husband. He has to go first because he’s there for me from the start and since then, every step of the way. He reads every book I write. He supports me when I’m having the writer’s moment of self-doubt and he lifts me up. He’s even brainstormed plot ideas with me on many occasions.

My readers. Their support, emails, and reviews propel me forward and keep me writing even when I’m feeling tired and I really need to push to get the words out.

My sister. She’s proud of my accomplishments and insisted on having some of my business cards so she can hand them people she knows or runs into. She also has signed copies of all my books.

My friends. They’re there to talk to, to have fun with, to share and to celebrate my successes with, which leads me to the next item on my list.

Celebrating past successes. By focusing on my accomplishments and growth, it only spurns me on. Even better is when I celebrate these successes by doing something I enjoy or buying something that I’ve wanted.

Like-minded people. I see what other successful authors are doing and am inspired to emulate them.

Relaxation. When my mind is free to “play” without figuring out the next logical plot point or how this character will react to a certain situation, this actually frees up the creative process so that when I go back to writing, the words flow. One of my favorite means of relaxing is going to the beach and listening to the waves crash against the shore. And even better is when I can get in the water and just “be” there, floating, looking up to the sky. Tranquil.

My love for law enforcement. The respect I have for these amazing men and women holds my writing to a high standard. I am inspired and motivated to ensure that my police procedurals are as true to real life as possible.

My characters. Let’s face it: without them “yapping” in my ear, my stories would fall short of being inspired. Please, let the voices continue.
